About the Meeting

MOLTO's goal is to develop a set of tools for translating online texts between multiple languages in real time with high quality. Multilinguality is a key strength of the approach taken by MOLTO: languages are separate modules in the tool and can be varied. The MOLTO prototypes will cover a majority of the EU's 23 official languages and some of them will be demonstrated during the meeting. As its main technique, MOLTO uses domain-specific semantic grammars and ontology-based interlinguas.

The MOLTO project meeting will showcase the past year's work and the current research being carried out by the partners, including the newly added Be Informed and the local organizers, University of Zürich.

The program will consist of introductory presentations aimed at a general audience, during the MOLTO Open Day, with demonstrations of the tools in progress.

MOLTO Open Day Program

The MOLTO Open Day schedules talks open to public. The idea of these talks is to give highlights of MOLTO's past year results, in short presentations and demos understandable for the largest possible audience. Colored clips will help you identify who's who during the meeting:

  • Black, our coordinator
  • White, the work package leaders
  • Auburn (a kind of dark red), the advisory board
  • Orange, the kind organizing team
  • Purple, those giving a presentation
  • Denim, those giving a demo

We'll also try to write the color initials on the clip (ops, cannot read black on black), not to leave the semantics just in the colors.

This day is a Consortium-only event. The program will be presentations concerning the details of each ongoing work-package. Since the review will occur soon, the presentations should be prepared as to serve also for the review.

Work group Day 9:30 - 16:30

A day devoted to bilateral meetings among people working in different tasks, in various workpackages. Take this opportunity to clear open issues, get direct explanations and network with the Consortium partners.

As usual, we try to arrange this beforehand, by using the wiki pages or tasks (namely issue a task for the topic of your work group).

  • WP10 - learn how to profit from the website, how to write your deliverable online, how to enter tasks, how to finalize your deliverable, OC
  • WP12 - Acewiki discussion: JS, AR, NF, KK, LA, TH, IL
  • WP2 - AR: best practices for grammar writing, because we need input from everyone, incl. BI
  • WP3 - LC: ontology grammar interface discussion, what happens when we edited some words? we need to figure out, MC: agree we need ontology-grammar interoperability group, had some conversation with Dana and Krasimir, need more.

Local arrangements in Zürich

Getting to Zurich

Most of you will probably arrive by plane. The Zurich Airport has an underground train-station, and the best way to get into town is to take the train either to Zurich main station (Zürich HB) or ­– since the MOLTO meeting will take place in the part of Zurich called Oerlikon – to the train-station Zürich Oerlikon. You can buy tickets for the trains at Zurich Airport either at a counter or at ticket-machines.

Please note: Though Zurich is a safe place there can be pickpockets at the airport and at Zurich main station who like to grab your bag while you are busy buying a ticket.

Getting around in Zurich

Public transport in Zurich and in the region of Zurich is divided into zones. The city of Zurich is zone 10 that counts price-wise as two zones. With your ticket you can use any means of transport within Zurich (tram, bus, train, boat, cable-car, ...). The most convenient ticket is the day pass that allows you to use the public transport system for 24 hours after buying the ticket: costs CHF 8.20. Tickets can be bought at ticket-offices and ticket-machines – but not within the cars. Make sure that you travel with a valid ticket, because being caught without a ticket is very expensive.

Getting to the Center of Continuing Education

The MOLTO Meeting will take place in the Zentrum für Weiterbildung der Universität Zürich (UZH Center of Continuing Education) whose web-site is only in German.

Check the map. The Center for Continuing Education is located at a central location in Zurich Oerlikon, a short walk from the train station Oerlikon. From downtown Zurich, the Center for Continuing Education is reached by public transport in about 10 minutes. Take tram No. 10 or 14 from Zurich main station or Zurich Oerlikon to the stops Hirschwiesenstrasse or Berninaplatz. Parking spaces for cars (charges) and bicycles are available.

Getting to the Department of Informatics

On Thursday, 8 March, at 17.15 o'clock we will have the possibility to attend a talk by Uli Sattler that will take place in the Department of Informatics. Directions to get there.

Switzerland uses the Swiss Franc (CHF), but in many places the Euro (€) is also accepted. If you pay by € then the return change will be in CHF.
